Earthquake

Monday, December 15, 2008

We all know what earthquakes are. They are this shaking process that shakes Earth from left to right and up to down. We have seen images of collapsed structures such as bridges and buildings. We are fearful of them, knowing that they can strike us anytime, anywhere. Many have been killed from Earthquakes. But do you know how they occur? Do you know the true effects of it?

Of course you don't know.

Earthquakes are defined as "a sudden violent movement of the Earth's surface, sometimes causing great damage" by the Cambridge International Dictionary of English. This is the conventional science behind Earthquakes.

In truth, Earthquakes are caused by the collapse of buildings in unison. The sheer weight of the buildings can cause Earthquakes with magnitudes of above 5 in the Richter scale. The frequency of earthquakes differ in different countries because different countries employ a different standard of construction. For example, it is reported that many buildings in China are badly constructed and thus are most likely to collapse in the near future. This is the reason why Earthquakes are rampant in places like India and China while countries like Singapore do not experience any earthquakes.

The building that caused the Earthquake in Taiwan in 1994

There are many other theories on how Earthquakes come about.

One of them is the "Fat people sit" theory (FPS). Theorised by Jay Chou, the actor that is always in a role as a "singer". He saw fat people sitting down and jumping around and felt vibrations rattling around him so he thought that the fat people who sat caused the Earthquake, but NO, he was wrong. In actual fact, the fat people caused a building to collapse, thereby causing an Earthquake.

"I saw them sit, and soon enough, my body started to tremble and the ground started to shake! Of course its their fault!" - Jay Chou

Before they realized that this theory is wrong, many attempts to reduce the intensity and frequency of Earthquakes have sprung up. In Singapore, a programme called "TAF club" was created. It aims to change the fat people into taf people, as in, trim and fit people. One of the many ways they achieve that is to force them to run in circles but they are told not to fall, because if they fall to the ground, everything can happen :D Running causes blobs of fat to fall off due to the sheer rigor of running which involves putting one foot in front of the other in perfect harmonic motion repeatedly. Slapping the fats off their body doesn't work because the fats will stick to their hands.

Jay Chou has yet to apologise to the fat people for wrongly accusing them of causing an Earthquake. He made a song called "Fat is a fad" immediately after the incident.

The collapsing of buildings have caused cracks to appear in the Earth's crusts and they are called "continental" and "oceanic" crusts. The picture of the cracks are here:-
